Specializing in African American history, public history, and the intersection of the two at historic sites and museums.
I have done an internship thesis which combines my academic work with my practical experience of working as Director of Interpreters at Burns-Belfry Museum and Multicultural Center. Through this project, I worked to center the interpretive narrative at Burns-Belfry on African American history and the historical church, within which it is housed, as it has evolved over the years. My research has uncovered numerous documents from the historical record which can be used to enhance the museum's interpretation. My research has also informed ways in which to expand the visitors' experience beyond the walls of the museum and place the historical church in the larger context of Oxford. By doing so, the visitor gains a deeper understanding of African American history in the Oxford community and therefore a more complete narrative than the one which has for so long dominated.
