  • Target Financial Services (TFS) is an SBU within Target Corporation that issue credit & debit cards & manages all customer financial transactions made through credit/debit cards or cheques at the POS.
  • They had a current Data Warehouse that was not meeting end user expectations.
  • Meanwhile, TFS was launching a new debit card product and the EDW had to be modified to include this new card data.
  • This, there were 2 objectives to this project - redesign the EDW to incorporate processes and data for the new card and define a roadmap on changes required in the EDW to meet customer expectations in terms of usability, data quality & performance.
  • I was involved in understanding the business processes and data touch-points for the new card and identifying the various sources from which data had to be extracted.
  • After a rigorous requirements gathering exercise, I redesigned the data models for the EDW and the data mart.
  • I also defined the high-level ETL architecture to load the new data elements into the redesigned data models.
  • As part of the effort to improve EDW usability and performance, I undertook workshops and sessions with the Target EDW team & the TFS business users to assess current state of the EDW and the expectations of the end users.

  • The product was created on Oracle.
  • The telecom data dumps were extracted into an Oracle 8i database.
  • The user interface was created by integrating MapInfo and BusinessObjects using Visual Basic.
  • The object model of BO and MapInfo products was used to develop the interface.
  • A demo version was created that showcased all the functionalities of the product.

  • My role in the project included designing the dimensional model for Orbitel, designing the logical & physical ETL model and creating the reports.
  • For the design of the dimension model, I had to interact with the end users to understand their requirements & incorporate the KPI's into the data model.
  • The 4 desired KPI's were Analysis of the new customers Analysis of the repeat buyers Analysis of churners, & Quantitative analysis on the volume, value & duration of calls made by Orbitel's customers.
  • My next activity was to study the source systems of Orbitel & based on that study, to develop the ETL process to take data from the Oracle 7.0 database (on an IBM machine) & load into the datamart ( on Oracle 8I).
  • Sagent's DataLoad was used for this process.
  • I was also required to create a few PL-SQL procedures for this activity.
  • The next step was to create the reports.
  • This was done on BusinessObjects 5.0.
  • One report on BO was created from a cube generated by Oracle Express.
  • I then developed an application in Visual Basic 6.0 to integrate all the reports and create an easy navigation interface for the final users.
  • I was a part of a team from Unisys de Colombia working at the client site in Medellin, Colombia.

  • My role in this project was to have extensive discussions with the people from Unisys, make a thorough study of the telecom industry (both Indian & international) and come up with a list of 39 KPI's that are crucial in the telecom industry.
  • I then developed a data model to answer these KPI's.

  • Telecom Application Package (TAP) is an end-to-end DSS solution for the telecom environment.
  • The initial phase was to study the telecom environment and arrive at the KPI's.
  • The study phase included going through the source tables which was on Oracle 8.
  • The relevant tables were identified and were extracted into MS SQL Server 7.0 using MS Data Transformation Services, an Extraction-Transformation-Loading tool that comes bundled along with SQL Server.
  • The star schema dimension model was then designed on SQL server.
  • T-SQL scripts on SQL Server's Query Analyser were used to populate some extra dimensions and attributes, data regarding which was not available on the source Oracle tables.
  • The front-end tool used was BusinessObjects.
  • 31 reports, covering 6 subject areas and 14 KPI's, was developed on BusinessObjects.

The packaged CRM application consists of a Siebel CRM system and a data warehouse. Siebel is the source of data for the data warehouse. Data is extracted from Siebel & loaded into the data warehouse & an Operational Data Store. The ODS is used for certain operation activities & there is a loop back into the Siebel System via EIM. An analytical BI system was developed over the data warehouse.
