At ages 12-13 I took Carnegie art classes every Saturday. These art classes were given to me by my art teacher who seen my potential. I filled out a youth connection application and was accepted. At the Carnegie youth art classes we learned about how to mix colors, sculpture, and would take inspiration by looking at the art in the exhibition. We had to take notes on how it made us feel, and draw what was in front of us at times.
During my sophomore year of high-school, two representatives from The Andy Warhol Arts Council came in to recruit five potential student interns for every Tuesday after school. Out of the 200 plus students I was picked. We learned techniques in the downstairs area of the Museum where there was a screen printing workshop, and materials we could use to our advantage. The goal of the program was to prepare us to create pieces for Youth Invasion, and event where youth can present their art in the Andy Warhol Museum and where teen performers take over the museum with their craft.
When I was 12 I signed up for a dance team called Studio G.
I did hiphop class every Tuesday and Saturday. I had to learn a specific hiphop dance for the end of the year recital, so that the dance owners would recruit me for competitive dancing. Once I performed my mother received a letter asking them for her permission to have me be apart of the team officially. Once we approved I had to go to many meetings concerning the conditions wnd rules of completions. After these meetings I had to condition for 30 minutes every Tuesday and Saturday and Thursday. We also would learn our routines under a sharp eye. We traveled to local completions such as in Ohio, Virginia, and tor nationals New Jersey. During nationals our team won 11th place out of 1000 people. During my time there we took many workshops and worked with professional choreographers who taught us many techniques.
After I completed dancing for Studio G, I auditioned for a local majorette all black dance team. After I made the team, I practiced every weekend. We performed at local majorette competitions. Most were in the city and close by. I would help make up dances for the younger children on the team, and also help do their makeup for competitions. I had to leave the team because I was coming of age.
