I worked for my Grandfather at his water well drilling company from the age of 16 until the age of 21. I gained experience in working with heavy machinery and working outside in all weather elements. Work sites would range from open fields to confined spaces. Use of basic hand tools, map reading skills and knowledge of water, pressure, and other elements were a must.
At the age of 21 a job opportunity presented itself in the Emergency Medical Field. I became an EMT-B and worked for Prince Edward Rescue Squad full time. I would provide patient care that would include operating under a wide range of protocols. Documentation is a very important part of EMS. I learned how to deal with very stressful situations and how to operate more job specific tools.
I received the opportunity to work paid hours for Prince Edward Rescue Squad. I would drive the ambulance to emergency calls, and provide patient care on the way to the hospital. Knowing when to call for more help and knowing how to maintain composure were two very important aspects of this job. Briefed new team members on procedures and project goals. I could supervise up to 4 other members at one time, and could often be placed in charge of an entire scene. I was promoted to second lieutenant, in which I was in charge for ordering supplies, parts, and tools. I would make sure all vehicles were completely stocked and all equipment was in date and in working order. I was quickly promoted at the next election to first lieutenant in which I am currently operating as. I am in charge of training meetings, making sure all members have proper certifications and am second in command for all rescue squad operations. If the squad captain is not present I am acting in his position .
I would install new water systems and service existing systems. I worked with family and would work a wide range of hours. Job sites could include open areas or confined spaces under homes. I would often be responsible for operating heavy machinery on site, and working the more tedious jobs in the field.
