I have been interested in fire fighting since my first year at college at Minnesota State Community Technical College in Moorhead Minnesota. It was such an amazing program it only made me want to pursue firefighting more. I currently work at the Bemidji Fire Department as a Dormitory fire fighter. The Dormitory position consists of assisting the full time staff with day to day duties. We also attend Medical, Gas, and Fire calls. The one thing that separates me from the other paid on call employees, is the Dormitory fire fighters live at station one, which is Bemidji's only 24 hour staffed station. We are on the first truck in route and on scene. As a dormitory fire fighter I have had many experiences and I continue to learning a lot from the Bemdiji Fire Hall and its staff.
In my one year while going to M State I received 10 Certifications. The Certifications I received were Fire Fighter 1, Fire Fighter 2, Haz-Mat Operations, Basic Water/ Ice Rescue, Basic Rope Rescue, Basic Auto Extrication, Basic Wildland Firefighter S130, S190, L180, and Scuba Diver level 2. I have put these certificates to use at my current position at the Bemidji Fire Department as a paid on call dormitroy fire fighter. I believe being a Dormitory fire fighter of Bemidji Fire Department I have received much experience and have made a large step in my fire fighting career.
Being a Bemidji Dormitory fire fighter has given me a great education and learning experience. I get the full prospective of whats its like to be a fire fighter while being a dormitory fire fighter. I have shadowed the fulls timers and have learned many things from the experience staff here at Bemidji Fire Department. During my first year of college as a class we did many hands on training days. Whether it was vehicle extrication, rope rescue, or ladders all those training days help me understand the tasks a firefighter would need to do on any scene.
I studied for one year at M State in Moorhead Minnesota. While I was attending M State I pursued the Fire Service Preparation. I took several fire courses for example, Intro to Fire Service, Fire Fighter 1 and 2, Fire Fighter Skills 1 and 2, Building Construction, Haz-Mat Operational, Technical Rescue, Fire Inspections and Code Enforcement. All the classes I attend have prepared me for the fire service. I am pursuing a EMT certification this up coming summer. I'm look forward to attending more fire courses in the near future.
