My duty as a Community Health R.N. was to have a face to face meeting with Developmental Delayed individuals who had been placed in private homes . I did a physical exam on each individual while noting any bruising or skin breaks. I did a review of each chart and made sure that the required visits to the doctor, dentist and eye doctors. I checked all lab results and made sure the medications were given as ordered by the physician. I talked with both the care giver and the individual I was seeing. Working together we tried to make changes that would improve the life of the person I was seeing.
Acted as staff nurse in A County Health Department. I was required to give immunizations to both children and adults. I did counseling of people with Aids and STD's. I worked the Free Clinic on Monday evenings that was provided by the local physicians to clients who were unable to afford health care..
On a daily basis I saw from 10-20 sick children, complaining of various ill. I did a health evaluation on each child and sent them back to the classroom with a note to the teacher or sent them home with the parent or other caregiver. Occasionally it was necessary for me to go to the classroom and do head checks for head lice.
Each year I conducted a Health Fair where each child was checked for Ht., Wt., B/P. Eye and hearing tests were done by others in the local community. Dental checks were done by local dental specialists. Each child was given a tooth brush.
I taught CPR and First Aid classes to staff.
As the Parents' as Teachers I had a set number of children that I
visited each month. I would take books to the child and encourage the parent to read to the child. We would sometimes play games, depending on the age of the child.
Wrote a successful grant for a hearing machine for the school.
As a Home Health R.N. I saw a set number of clients that chose West Central as their Home Health provider. Some of these clients I saw on a weekly basis. Others I saw bi-weekly or monthly. I did a physical on each client . I set up medication, we discussed ways that could improve their health. I did wound care if needed.
I also taught CPR for the staff at a local Assisted Living facility.
(I did this free of charge)
Saw 80-120 students per day with a variety of ills, both real and imagined and depending on the time of the year. I either sent them back to their classroom with a note to the teacher or called the designated parent or other to pick them up and take them home. I had a number of students who brought me medications at various times throughout the year that I was required to administer. Asthma students came to me for treatment as required by a note from their physician. Each student's sick call visit was put into the computer.
While I was a nurse here I made several "hot line" calls to Jefferson City when I thought a child might be abused at home.
I was able to get the "Miles for Smiles" bus to come to our school and give free dental care to students who had no dental coverage and could not afford to see a dentist.
Each year a Health Fair was held and with the assistance of community helpers we were able to screen 300+ students.
