Taught French I and English 9 at a boys' private school. This was a very traditional, almost classical school. The students stood when the teacher entered the room, remained standing until the teacher said "Gentlemen, please be seated." Although I would have preferred using a more conversational and lively approach for a group of ninth grade boys, I was instructed to use a strict grammar translation approach.
I stuck to the required format, using oral reading and conversation as much as time allowed. The majority of the students learned the basics of French grammar well. They developed their accents through oral reading with some conversation included. Often the students answered questions (in French) about the reading which had just been finished.
I taught at this school for two years and then went to Indiana University in Bloomington and learned from the audio-lingual approach and was taught how to use that approach in classes.
