I observed a rapid decline in employees morale in 2005, and approached leadership with an idea to turn it around. By providing periodic activities, I could raise the morale of majority of staff. The staff that was extremely pessimistic were invited to be on the committee. By including those negative employees in a forum, I was able to better identify the causes of their attitudes. I worked with leadership to have rotating potlucks, contests and an annual picnic. As morale improved there was a demand for more activities from the staff, since they enjoyed them immensely. In 2008 our budget for things was eliminated. I reorganized the activities and I have been successful in improving employees attitudes toward their work environment for seven years. We have added canned food drives, physician sponsored contests, and military care packages drives.
Assisted anesthesia staff with intubation, extubation, patient care, transporting, cleaning machines and instruments and restocking of supplies.
UBC is a self governing entity involving all aspects within surgery to find solutions to concerns and improve our department. As chairman, I wrote rules of conduct, established term limits, created additional positions and established rules of succession. During my tenure I was able to transform the adversarial environment to a cohesive teamwork environment. I was successful in bringing together incredibly opposing personalities and forging an alliance towards success.
