ACADEMIC PROJECTS Group Dynamics
  • Created a hypothetical group counseling program for survivors of sex trafficking to transition from a shelter to greater independence.
  • This project illustrated the principals of group process, offered an opportunity to learn about the needs of trauma survivors, and served as practice in developing a grant proposal.
  • Participated in weekly group counseling with six other classmates for a full 16 week semester which fostered a genuine appreciation for the benefits of group counseling.
  • Lifespan Development Interviewed an older adult and wrote a paper interpreting his personal narrative in terms of developmental stages.
  • This allowed me to practice my helping skills and gave me insight into the needs of older adults, specifically Veterans.
  • Analyzed and presented to the class my own life in terms of Erikson's developmental stages.
  • This demonstrated the influence of developmental stages on the counseling process.
  • Cultural Considerations in Counseling Created a group activity exploring the particular considerations of White counselors working with African American clients.
  • This employed my knowledge of the group process and investigated a scenario in which the values and beliefs of the client's culture are often overlooked, which results in violation of the ethics code, but more importantly, fails the client and reinforces a stigma against counseling.
  • Immersion activities and journals to experience African American culture.
  • This made clear the necessity for multicultural perspectives formed through experience rather than simply an academic understanding.
  • Emotionally-Focused Couples Therapy Explored attachment theory and the neuroscience of relationship development and its implications for adult relationships.
  • Role-played counseling sessions with a couple and implemented techniques of EFCT to focus on emotions and model being a safe haven for the clients' emotional distress.
  • Encouraged enactments between members of the couple in order to increase the sense that it is safe to be emotionally vulnerable within their relationship.
