I am a non traditional student, or as my classmates call me "old". I have worked many jobs including:food service, mechanic, construction, floor covering, and finally maintenance and transportation with the local county board (MCBOE). I ran a business for twenty years and was forced to quit when I hurt my knee. I started driving a bus and wanted to come back to College to take some nursing classes. I had previously attended Concord in 1991-93 but was not committed at that time. I have returned and brought my GPA up from 1.6 to 3.0. This time I am fully committed not only to graduate, but to excel in all aspects of my career. After working with the students on my bus I realized I enjoyed working with students, and decided to pursue teaching. After working with some students as a tutor, and spending some time in the class for my field placements I have come to realize that teaching is a perfect fit for me. By studying something that I love (Biology and the Sciences) I think I will be able to motivate and inspire my students. Teaching them not only about science, but to embrace learning of any kind. I dropped out of school in the 10th grade, and have had a long road back to the point I am at now. I hope to use the experiences I had to help my students make better choices than I did at their age. I hope I can influence my students to stay in school, and become more successful in their futures.
I currently operate a school bus, and am responsible for safety and supervision of my students. I maintain the bus and perform safety inspections daily. I assume a leadership role at work and am a group leader at many in-service meetings. I spent one summer maintaining the grounds at Bluefield High school.
Over twenty years I ran a successful flooring business, and was responsible for all aspects of it. I consider myself to be a leader in the area, and built a large client list. After many years I was forced to retire due to an injury which would not let me continue in the field. I enjoyed this type of work but I am more excited to be starting a new direction by entering the teaching field.
I worked as several restaurants in my home town of Jupiter. I bussed tables and also worked as a waiter. I believe having this job first taught me to be very open with people. I have never been a shy person and I generally feel very comfortable addressing people. I hope I can influence my students to be able to talk with and share ideas with others. I hope I can pass this confidence to my students by being a good example, and helping them to be able to work together.
I am currently attending Concord University, in pursuit of a Biology teaching degree. I came to Concord between 1991 and 1993, but I was not committed and my GPA was only 1.6. Now I have brought it up to 3.0 and feel like I can continue to bring it higher until I graduate.
