Neither of my parents sail, but I have found a love for the sport six years ago. I joined sailing via my own volition and have loved every moment since. I began sailing in an opti and slowly transitioned to a double handed 420. After only a year of 420s I began sailing a laser. The summer after 420s, I moved into sailing a laser full time and have been fairly successful at it, placing 16th at the High School nationals in the fall. During school, I sail for my high school team and with them I have competed in three nationals this season alone. Through this, I have learned necessary team work and leadership skills. Additionally, I have learned time management and cooperation. I continue my love for sailing during the summer and during the fall and spring. As a sailor myself, I know how to make a boat go fast and I know the tools and gear that budding sailors will need. I plan to bring my extensive sailing knowledge to West Marine and believe that I can help customers choose the best item for their needs.
I have been sailing for the Chicago Yacht Club Race Team since 2012. By sailing with and for the Chicago Yacht Club I know the gear that sailors want to buy and can help them in purchasing the correct item. Both as a consumer and a peer, I have gained vast knowledge on the best spray tops, spray pants, and drysuits. I will ensure that the customers are satisfied with their items. As a High School Sailor, I know how to talk to youth sailors and give them the guidance that they need when purchasing new gear. While the majority of my sailing has been in dinghies, I have regatta experience in bigger boats and can assist adults and keelboat sailors in purchasing both clothing and gear for their boat.
From being on the Chicago Yacht Club Race Team, I have gained:
While being a boat owner is not a skill, it has given me knowledge about boat work and taking care of a boat that will be helpful at West Marine. I have done a fair amount of boat work on my own boat which gives me a strong base of knowledge to pull from when assisting customers. Additionally, I have incorporated many improvements on my own boat in the form of block upgrades and splicing line and I will pass this knowledge on to the West Marine community and to the customers.
From being a boat owner, I have gained:
As a boat worker for the Chicago Yacht Club, I gained important knowledge in how boats are fixed and the materials needed to fix boats. I learned how to gelcoat, fix dollys and trailers and fiberglass, among other things. This knowledge will help me assist customers when they are looking for the right item to solve their boat problem. I can direct customers to the correct item to ensure their ultimate satisfaction. I will be able to give them helpful pointers and tips that will also aid them in boat work. I know what boaters need and can diagnose their problems once told the symptoms of the issue.
