I have been a member of the Financial Aid community since 2006, and after becoming familiar with the position, I realized that I didn't find a job; I found a career. Guiding a nervous, first-time college student through the process, watching them grow as a student and a person, then seeing them become a productive member of our society is extremely rewarding. My goal is to remain an active member of this industry and use the skills I've acquired over the years to make my institution the best it can be.
Skilled in Ellucian Colleague
Strong sense of community
Active team builder
Advised students and families through the Financial Aid process from start to finish. Communicated with them through email, phone, and in person to ensure they had a clear understanding of the documents and requirements. Processed ISIR data, Verification, and Federal/private loans. Created Financial Aid awards and reviewed appeals for additional funding. Lobbied Senators and Legislators at the state level in support of the Virginia Tuition Assistance Grant (VTAG) program. Developed and implemented a program that got current students involved in the VTAG grassroots lobbying efforts.
Developed strong leadership skills through being elected to the School Board for the Blue Ridge District of Franklin County. Advocated for students, staff, and community to give our students the education they deserved while being fiscally responsible to our residents. Visited schools and spoke with principals, teachers, and students to assess their needs. Spoke with Elementary students about local government and civic engagement. Chaired School Board meetings and performed other duties in the absence of the School Board Chair.
Recruited students for each incoming class. Reviewed High School and College transcripts and SAT/ACT scores to determine eligibility. Traveled throughout the Southeast region to attend college recruitment fairs and meet with High School students and guidance counselors to promote the institution. Organized events in key recruitment areas to strengthen enrollment. Provided copy for recruitment literature and created a library describing each major and minor, complete with classes, employment opportunities, and faculty contact information to be used as a tool to guide students to the program best suited for them.
