When I was hired on in the Manufacturing department as a Management lead, my mission was to deal effectively with the diversity of the staff, increase productivity and learn, then train the employees in the addition of robotics on the assembly line.
I took the first couple months to emerge myself in programming the system, trial and error fixes, common causes of malfunctions and 5 min. maximum 'down time' for assembly lines.
This resulted in significant increases in production for all shifts. Where there used to be tension between shifts, there was now alliances formed. We used incentives for each machine versus each shift, allowing for friendlier competition. Employees were soon able to trouble-shoot their own problems, leaving me open to fill-in on the assembly line if we had someone call-in. Creating win-win situations.
