Interested in pursuing a position as an Instructor on the college level at a school that is committed to enhancing the educational well-being of their students by making learning not only a challenging, but an enjoyable experience that will ultimately prepare future educators of STEM courses to provide highly-engaging, inquiry-based instruction to elementary and middle-school students.
Teaching at Irondale Middle School as a Mathematics teacher has provided me with a plethora of opportunities to provide conceptual, hands-on learning experiences for a very diverse group of students. In order to make sure that all students benefit from rich lessons, I have a high implementation of lessons from Greater Birmingham Math Partnership and Math Design Collaborative. In addition, I have also created many unique lessons of my own that are tailored to the needs of my students, therefore helping to bring the real-world connections that are so important in the field of mathematics to all children. Student discourse and justification is a major focus in my mathematics classroom, and I strive to make sure that as many Standards for Mathematical Practice as possible are present in each lesson that I facilitate.
As a teacher at Prince of Peace Catholic School, I had the opportunity to experience several different grade levels of teacher, as well as several different content areas. I specialized and am Highly Qualified in Middle School Mathematics. I taught 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade mathematics, as well as Algebra I, for which I pioneered the curriculum. In addition, I also taught 8th grade Physical Science for several years. As a successful fifth grade teacher I implemented the first fifth grade curriculum for the school, as well as helped to conceptualize what the fifth grade program would be at the young school.
Substitute teaching at Hoover City Schools allowed me to gain insight to a variety of teaching styles and developmental stages of students. It was through this experience that I was able to determine the best fit for me as an effective educator of children.
