Ovarian Cancer Research with Dr. Wenlong Bai at Shriner's Hospital. My duties as lab assistant/volunteer/student were to clean glassware and prepare experiments assigned to me. I performed western blots, electrophoresis and experiments with ovarian cancer cells and live animals. Using western blots, my overseer and I attempted to identify the binding between Vitamin D receptors as a pathway of apoptosis for ovarian cancer cells. Electrophoresis was a tool I learned and utilized to track the bloodlines of mice that were used in experiments. The bloodlines were used to verify their genotypes of specific gene markers.

I volunteered at Medical Mission and checked in over 200 patients seeking medical care. Many of the patients seen at the clinic live in an under-served community in Washington DC. I assisted patients in completing tedious medical paperwork. Though I did not personally perform medical exams, I was a vital asset to the organization to ensure a smooth process for patients to get medical paperwork filed and exams performed for their necessary medical needs.

Working within Tampa Bay Watch as a volunteer, I contributed personal time in beach clean ups, marsh grass planting and oyster dome building which helped restore natural habitats in the Tampa Bay area. Dedicating many weekends, I planted over 1,000 salt marsh plants, picked up an averaged of over 2,000 pounds of trash, and built over 24 Oyster domes. Shepard's Parkway Clean-up, located in Ward 8. The area was previously used as an informal landfill in the 70's when there was no formal trash collection provided by the city. By cleaning this area that is designated as a national park, we are attempting to restore the natural beauty of the habitat that has been destroyed by the piles of trash.

Pharmacy Volunteer at Malcolm Grow Medical Clinic located on Andrews Air Force Base. As a volunteer, I provide my assistance within the pharmacy to bag prescriptions and go through the pharmacy's stock of medications and verifying expiration dates. This allows creates a greater flow and ease within the pharmacy for the pharmacists and the pharmacy technicians that are otherwise inundated with massive amounts of patients that come through the office.
