My career highlights include becoming a board certified surgeon and successfully establishing a new medical clinic dedicated to the prevention of unnecessary leg amputations and loss of life. I was proud to serve those with no insurance and limited funds here and in Haiti. During this time I published several research papers in peer-reviewed journals such as the Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association, resulting in speaking engagements as far away as New Zealand. Both before and after my medical careeer, the happiest and most fulfilling years of my life were those years spent in service to my students.
The skills of a high school, and especially a junior high school teacher include an ability to maintain discipline in a potentially challenging environment. I learned to do this by ensuring that the lessons I delivered were carefully planned to maintain enough interest and excitement that students rarely felt the need to act out.
The skills of a physician and surgeon include emotional resilience, a calm temperament, and the ability to make life and death decisions under conditions of extreme pressure, as well as the physical stamina to cope with the demands of surgery, and the ability to lead and manage a team effectively.
Establishing a medical clinic where none existed before involved an entrepreneurial skill set outside of medicine and surgery that included securing bank loans, as well as hiring and working with architects, business personnel, and medical staff as president, CEO, and solo practitioner of the clinic.
As adjunct professor I was responsible for teaching pre-med classes, both lecture and lab. I worked closely with individual students to help them achieve their goals. These sometimes included medical college, MCAT prep, and other tutoring.
I currently enjoy volunteer tutoring at Cristo Rey High School in Tampa, a unique college-entrance institution designed to give an educational boost to impoverished and under-served boys and girls.
