Initiated spirited classroom discussions to help students delve deeply into the craft of storytelling. By dividing the class into craft and workshop components, the class learned to strip stories and poems down to their basic parts in order to see not only how these works were constructed, but to explore why and where the writing was most successful. By learning how to be better readers, the class learned how to be more effective writers. Students learned how to write poems and short stories, and were encouraged to find and develop their own personal frequency as storytellers. In the process, they learned to analyze, critique, and edit their own and each other's work with kindness and curiosity. We developed a trusting and supportive environment where students felt safe to be honest with each other, so they could do their best work.
