"Why should we hire you?" is an incredibly common interview question. In fact, it is perhaps the most important question that could be asked of you during a job interview.
Often, the question is asked directly. Sometimes other variations are used. Nearly every question an interviewer asks during an interview is meant to provide information about this question. It can be one of the most difficult to answer. It's hard to sell yourself.
However, because of its sheer importance to landing the job, it's crucial to take some time to figure out how to prepare your answer before the interview.
Make it succinct
One of the hardest parts about answering this important question is narrowing it down succinctly. Interviewers don't want to hear you go on and on. They prefer you be able to directly list your most important qualifications for the job.
Therefore, you should be able to provide just three or four reasons that you are the ideal candidate for them.
Include these things
There are certain things you will want to include in answer to the questions about why the employer should hire you. This is your chance to share the expertise, skills and personal qualities that will make you the professional they want in the position.
Be sure to discuss past accomplishments, especially ones that could translate well to the position for which you're applying. Mention any awards you've won. Include anything that might set you apart from the competition.
Practice, practice, practice
One of the most important things to remember when going to a job interview is to present yourself in a relaxed and confident manner. Taking time to practice what it is you want to say and how to answer expected questions will help you to feel more secure in your presentation.
However, you don't necessarily want to write and memorize a script, as that would sound unnatural. Write down some bullet point that you think are important to present to the interviewer. Then take time to practice giving a response until you feel comfortable. Your answer can be different each time you practice, as long as you include each point of importance.
Finally, don't forget to show enthusiasm in your approach. Demonstrating that you truly want the position and that you believe you would be a good fit for the job can take you a long way toward receiving an offer.
The question "Why should we hire you?" doesn't have to be a scary one. Follow the tips above on how to prepare your answer before the interview, and you're sure to improve your chances of having a successful experience.
