Responding to Anonymous Job Postings and Blind-Box Job Ads
The only situation in which you will not be able to find out the name of the person to whom to write is when the job ad does not identofy the company and when the want ad is a blind-box ad.
If you respond to one of these “faceless” ads, you can address your letter in one of three ways:
- Dear Hiring Manager for [name of advertised position]
- Dear Boxholder, Dear Friends
- Simply leave off the salutation and begin with the body of the letter
There are many reasons why employers do not wish to disclose their identity — though most are afraid of simply being overwhelmed with job-seeker responses. However, job-seekers should also be aware that scammers often use these types of ads to obtain personal information… so beware and only apply to ads published on trustworthy sites/media.
