How to respond to Are you a team player?
What is the employer really asking?
The employer wants to know how well you get along with others — wants to know about your communications and leadership abilities. Almost all jobs require workers to work together in some fashion — and many actually work in work-teams.
But it is also a bit of a trick question — because it is one of many that could be answered with a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ response.
How job-seekers should respond to this question
Discuss your experience working in teams — and demonstrate how you were a good team player and/or leader.
Your team experience can come from school, work, volunteering, and sports.
Remember never to just say ‘yes’ (and of course, never respond ‘no’) — always provide a story or anecdote that shows your teamwork.
