A Summary section should be 4-6 lines and should address an overview of your experience, two or three major skill sets, and some valuable personality traits/soft skills
A summary should showcase the best parts of the applicant, making them sound valuable and qualified. The summary at the top of this sample resume has one personality trait and an objective, but it could be expanded a little further. WRONG: Summary Machinist with outstanding problem solving skills focused on driving continuous improvement through innovative ideas and methods. All lists should be in bullet point format
The experience section provides a list of the tasks performed, how they were performed, and highlights accomplishments and excellence, if there is not a separate Accomplishments section. You don’t want to have these details in paragraph form. Instead, use a bullet point format that will make it easier to read and brings attention to each specific point. This will also allow the list to take up more space, and appears more organized and professional.
Start each point with a strong action verb
This section is an opportunity to share what kind of worker you are, not just the fact that you performed certain duties. The experience section should not read like a job description. This part of the resume can really be engaging and demonstrates the unique path of growth you have taken. Don’t begin any point by simply listing the duty, or with responsible for or accountable for.
Aim for 5-8 bullet points per section
There are a lot of ways that you can expand your Experience section, even if you don’t feel like there are that many unique aspects about a previous job to share. Did you have to interact with others on a daily basis? Did you work in a team or lead a team? Did you sometimes perform additional duties or learn any new skills? All of these things are relevant, so think of ways to creatively include them in the Experience section.
