Anyone interested in welding should look at a welder resume sample to get some ideas about how to properly format it. However, we had our experts read one of these samples, and there are actually many things that can be improved with it. They have some pretty useful tips on how to write an effective resume, so keep this advice in mind when crafting your next resume.
Include a summary and skills section
This sample resume only has two sections: one dedicated to work experience and another devoted to education. However, a well-written resume should have much more to it, including a summary between four and six sentences long that provides a broad overview of what you would bring to the position. You should also include a section dedicated to the various skills you possess that could come in handy at this new job. Adding these parts will provide much needed depth to your resume.
Begin bullet points in experience section with strong verbs
Take a look at some of the points given on this resume sample:
It is important to always hold the attention of anyone reading your resume, and a good way to accomplish that goal is to begin every point you make in your job history portion with a strong active verb. Instead of writing a list like the one above, you should have it like this:
You will also notice that we added periods at the end of every point, which is something else you should do on your own resume.
Write using appropriate tenses
If you no longer work at a job, then you should convey that fact through the use of the past tense. However, if you do currently work, then you would want to talk about it using the present tense. This sample resume has everything written in the present tense, so when talking about his time at Wetmore, you would want to rewrite it as such:
Do your best to get your resume down to a page
If you have decades of work experience, then you might be able to get away with having a resume that is multiple pages long. However, most people will want to have a resume that sticks to a single page, which keeps everything concise and lowers the risk of an employer missing something by not reading the second page. Once you add a summary and skills section to this resume sample, it may get over a page. Since this person has plenty of work experience, he could probably afford to lose one or two of his places of employment and stick to whatever is most recent and relevant.
Include dates with education
This person has earned some useful certificates that will be useful in his field, but he has failed to include any dates regarding when he earned them. If his education was quite some time ago, then his certifications may be out of date. You want to include as much specific information as possible on your resume, so always include the dates you went to school. There are numerous ways to mess up a resume, but once you learn what hiring managers want, making a mistake is virtually impossible.
