Include a skills section
Although there is a Highlights section showcasing what are considered soft skills like reliable team worker and excellent multi-tasker, it’s also important to bring attention to other major relevant skills you acquired through your work experience. Describe current employment is present tense
The author does a good job of listing the candidate’s work history, starting with the current position and going backwards in chronological order. Past work is always listed in the past tense. However, when you’re currently employed, always list your duties, responsibilities and accomplishment in the present tense. WRONG Described use and operation of merchandise to customers. Received and processed cash and credit payments for in-store purchases. Worked as a team member to provide the highest level of service to customers. RIGHT Describe use and operation of merchandise to customers. Receive and process cash and credit payments for in-store purchases. Work as a team member to provide the highest level of service to customers.
Be sure to use bullets when making lists
The Experience section is an excellent place to highlight your skills, knowledge and abilities, but doing so in an improper way can ruin your chances of landing an interview. The Walmart sales associate resume sample has a good list of duties and responsibilities but lacks the bullets required in a professional resume. WRONG Managed team of five professionals. Worked as a team member performing cashier duties, product assistance and cleaning. Served as the company’s only bilingual Spanish/English customer service representative. Performed store opening duties, including counting cash drawers and checking all equipment for proper functioning. RIGHT
Don’t mention your high school education, unless you’re a teenager
Although the author of this Walmart sales associate resume sample graduated a few years ago, the high school diploma is listed in the Education section. Even though it’s not a bad thing, it’s not something that will help you get a job. In addition, the job candidate completed course work in community college. When you have attended college, it’s assumed you have a high school diploma. The only time you need to list your high school diploma or GED is when that is your only education.
Provide sufficient education information
The author scores points by listing college names, locations and relevant course work. The only thing missing is the year the course work was completed. Make sure you include the date and list entries, starting with the most recent.
