Writing your resume is your opportunity to authentically showcase your unique skills and professional experiences. To help you out with this important process, we have reviewed a Wal-Mart Assistant Store Manager resume sample and highlighted areas that could use improvement or modification. Be sure to pay close attention to these areas and avoid making the same common mistakes in your own resume writing.
Pay attention to capitalization
When you are writing your resume, remember that even the smallest details can make a difference. In the case of this sample resume, the applicant has used an inconsistent form of capitalization in the highlights section. In every other way, the proper formatting has been used. The simple adjustment of keeping only the first word capitalized can make an immediate improvement on the writing.
Accomplishments section should be specific
The accomplishments section is for listing specific awards or accomplishments that you have received throughout your professional career. The proper format of this section is using bullet points and having at least 3 items in the section. In this sample resume, the section appears as following: Collaborate with Management to ensure smooth work flow and efficient organization of operations. Accountable for all operations of organization including performing administration tasks such as preparation of client meetings, filing, developing spreadsheets, faxing reports, photocopying collateral and scanning documents for inter-departmental use. Ensured smooth operations by supporting executive team. Facilitated on boarding of new employees by hiring, scheduling, training, answering questions and processing paperwork. Responsible for training all new employees to ensure continued quality of customer service. Multitasking Demonstrated proficiencies in telephone, e-mail, fax and front-desk. The content of this text is strong; however, many of these descriptions belong in the previous experience section where they can be associated with a specific job. Otherwise, this block of text seems generic and out of place. Remember that not having an accomplishments section at all will not set you back. When in doubt, it is always best to keep your resume as relevant and as specific as possible.
Consolidate previous work descriptions
Describing your previous or current work responsibilities is one of the most important areas of your resume. Doing so not only offers a glimpse of your professional history, but also demonstrates what you have gained from each experience. In most cases, the employer is not so much concerned with where you have worked in the past but rather what you have taken out of the position. The ability to capture the responsibilities of each job in no more than 8 bullet points can impress even the pickiest of employers.
Keep tenses consistent
One small detail of resume writing that is often overlooked by applicants is using the current tense for verbs. In this resume sample, the applicant has used the past tense for describing a current position. As a rule of thumb, use the present tense for current positions and the past tense for previous positions. Doing so can strengthen the consistency of your writing and also emphasize what you are currently responsible for. This is the reason why you want to list the most current work experience first.
