Eliminate third person pronouns from resume’s summary
Starting your resume with a quick summary of all that you have earned and accomplished throughout your professional career is a great way to spark interest and make them want to read the rest of your resume. In an attempt to impress, you may want to use complete sentences that begin with words like I, but this is unnecessary. You can eliminate these kinds of pronouns from the summary. Therefore, if we were to alter this sample resume’s summary, it would look like this: Provide prompt assistance during emergency calls. Goal is to help the critically ill and injured patients by responding to them immediately and providing them with efficient care. However, there is still more we can do to make this summary really stand apart from the crowd.
Summary should be a minimum of four lines
You do not want your summary to be too long because you want to save some material for the rest of the page. However, it should be longer than a sentence or two. The ideal length for resume summaries is four to six lines in length. This will give the hiring manager enough information to spark his or her interest while not giving everything away.
Use present tense for jobs you work at right now
As can be observed from this resume sample, the first position listed under work history is a job he currently works at. However, many of the bullet points are written in the past tense. You want to make sure your grammar is always accurate, and that means using present tense for present work. These points should be rewritten to read like this:
Keep resume down to just one page
Most employers expect to receive resumes that are only one page long, so if you send in a resume that goes on to a second page or even longer, then you may have lost the job before they have even looked at it. This sample resume is pretty long, and there are plenty of pieces of superfluous information that can be taken out. There are numerous positions listed under work experience, and a couple of those can probably be eliminated and the same effect would be gained. You really want to think about what material is going to be most impressive for the job you are trying to get.
