Have a summary, not an objective
The beginning of this sample resume starts with an objective statement as opposed to a summary. This person uses this crucial portion of his resume to simply say that he is interested in getting a job, but that information is already conveyed through his application. Instead, you want to use the very top part of your resume to highlight some key skills and personality traits you possess that could prove to be essential in this new job. Your resumes summary should also be around four to six sentences long.
Use the proper order
Employers expect to find a similar format on every resume they receive. The reason why you want to stick to this format is that you want to lead with the most crucial information first and then gradually make your way to material that provides more details about your skillset and experiences. Generally, you want to follow this order on your resume:
For this sample resume, education is the second section when it should be more toward the bottom because any degrees you have received will not necessarily be as important as your real world experience.
For education, you should list most recent first
On this sample resume, his high school diploma is listed first, and then underneath that is his college experience. You always want to start with whatever is most recent first, whether you are discussing education or work experience. As a matter of fact, this person has been to community college and is currently enrolled in a 4-year college, so he does not even need to include his high school experience because he already has plenty of additional education to talk about.
Five to eight bullet points per workplace
This person has worked at a number of places, but each one only has one or two bullet points. You want to go into the greatest detail possible any time you are talking about your work experience, and one or two sentences is not going to cut it. For this particular resume, you could easily add some more information by taking some of the material in the Relevant Experience section, which is not needed on a resume, and putting it in the regular experience portion. There should be plenty of things you have done at each job even if you did not have a particularly senior position.
Use past tense for past jobs
Whenever you are writing your resume, you want to be certain that you are using the proper tenses depending on when you had each job. That means for a job you presently work at, you should use the present tense while jobs you worked at in the past should be written in the past tense. Using this resume as an example, the following bullet points are written for a job he left in 2011.
