Choosing to pursue a different job can be really exciting, but there is also a lot of stress associated with it. These rules should be applied to every resume regardless of the field you are in, so read on to learn more.
Resumes should begin with a summary, not an objective
This sample resume begins with an objective statement that basically says he is looking to obtain a position at this company. That information does not need to be put on a resume because a hiring manager is going to know you are looking for a new job. Why else would you be submitting your resume in the first place? The much better thing to do would be to start your resume with a brief, concise summary that mentions your skillset and experiences that make you qualified for this new position. You do not have to go into a lot of details, but it should make the reader interested to read the rest of your resume.
Skills should be short and to the point
This resume has some great skills mentioned in the highlights section, but you want every point within this part of your resume to be short and concise. There is no need to go into a ton of detail because you are just trying to get across what talents you bring to the table. There is no reason to have excessively long statements, so you could shorten each one of these down, making the list look like this:
Education should come after work experience
Your educational background is certainly important to you getting a job, but it is preferable that you lead with your work experience. Even if you have not really ever had a job and are still a student, it would still be good to list whatever positions you had in the past first before getting into your degree. This sample resume certainly has some impressive information listed under education, but that information should just be reserved for more toward the bottom of the resume.
Include dates for all workplaces and schools
You never want to make a hiring manager guess something about your resume. On this sample resume, the dates of employment are given, but nothing is listed for his time at Southwestern College and Grossmont College. We have no idea if he attended those universities within the last few years or if they were decades ago. The best thing to do is to make everything as clear as possible and include dates for everything.
No need to have a section titled Additional Information
This resume sample ends with a section with additional information about the writer, but this is unnecessary to include on a resume. You do not want to have too many divisions within your resume because it can get confusing, and there is no need to state that you are a U.S. citizen on your resume like this sample one does. That information can be gained later, so eliminate sections of your resume that are superfluous.
