If you are getting stressed out trying to write a great resume, then let our experts take some of the burden off you. We asked these experts to read a US postal service employee resume sample to see what aspects can be improved with it. Many of these tips can be applied to any resume regardless of the type of field you are hoping to get into.
Summary should be six lines long at most
A summary consisting of information regarding your experiences and skillset should be the very first item on your resume, but you do not want to overload it with information. The general recommendation is that a resume summary should be between four and six lines in length. This sample resume has a summary that goes well beyond that, so the writer would want to remove some information that gets repeated later. One way to cut back on length would be to get rid of the following statement: I am now looking forward to a new experience in my working life. I desire a position in an office environment. I would like to work closer to home. There is never any reason to state that you are looking for a new job on a resume, so it would be best to cut it.
Include at least three achievements under accomplishments section
Although it is entirely optional, it can be very impressive to an employer to see all the awards and accolades you have acquired over the years. However, if you are going to include a separate section for this material, then you want to make sure it is warranted. That means having a minimum of three achievements, and this resume sample only has one listed. Unless the writer can come up with a couple more accomplishments to talk about, it would be better to simply put this underneath work history.
Include bullet points for every job under work history
The summary on your resume should be presented as a paragraph, but you want to use bulleted lists when you are talking about your job history. This sample resume has the information presented under the US Postal Service as one continuous statement. This material should be reformatted to look like this list:
Use a variety of verbs
In order to immediately capture the attention of the reader, you want to begin every bullet point with a strong action verb. However, you do not want to use the same word over and over again. As we can see from the list above, the word Helped is used twice. It is a little boring seeing the same word again, so one of those points should use a synonym to mix it up a little bit.
Include as much specific information as possible
There is a lot of vague information presented for this job, and you always want to try to make yourself stand out from the other job applicants. Therefore, you should include truthful, detailed information when possible. For example, one of the bullet points is that they received awards. That is a very good point to bring up, but it would be a lot better if he listed what specific awards the company won. Doing this will help make your resume not read like a general job description. Reading other people’s resumes is a great way to become a better writer yourself.
