Navy jobs are usually stable and fairly paid. They also tend to have a large number of well-trained applicants. Government jobs and contracts see resumes in the masses, so you will have to put out your best to make a strong impression. That is exactly why we have analyzed this example resume to highlight some of the easiest ways to elevate your submission. Follow the advice here and you will be on your way to an impressive, professional resume that is sure to get you to the next stage.
Make use of a skills or highlights section
This resume has a reasonably rich experience. In all of that experience it is likely that some specific skills were developed. Before getting to the experience section, you can entice an interviewer to be more excited about your finer attributes by summarizing them in their own section. Such a section should have at least five bullet points, but listing even more is fine. Be sure not to have more than eight points in a column; this makes the list easier to read quickly. You can and should include hard and soft skills here. Example:
Education should have newest entries listed first
The typical convention for resume lists is to put the most important point first. Summaries come before the main body of information to convince readers to finish the document. When it comes to listing work experience and education, a hiring manager considers your most recent work the most relevant. You should keep this in mind and list your points accordingly. In general, educational accomplishments become more impressive as you continue. This is yet another compelling reason to list them in reverse chronological order.
Bulleted lists should have five to eight points per column
When it comes to the experience section, your lists are usually full of rich detail. Because of this, it rarely looks appealing to have more than one column of bullets in this section. These lists, like any other, should aim for five to eight points per heading. This is the sweet spot between an unimpressively small amount of information and a cumbersome, tiring list. Many applicants in every field find it difficult to think of enough entries for their earlier or entry-level positions. The easiest way to overcome this is to think of specific challenges or moments of success. If you can more precisely show your ability to meet or exceed expectations, you will appear more impressive. Example: Yeoman United States Navy ? Groton, CT
You can see how barren this particular example appears. Any job that required this little of its workers seems very unimpressive. Much more likely, this job was as challenging and demanding as any other of its level. Finding examples to highlight why this experience was valuable is one of the most important aspects of a great resume. These three points should go a long way to helping you master your resume and application, but they are not the limit of available help.
