Your resume is a chance to really sell yourself to potential employers. It is important that you design your resume so that it makes you stand out from other applicants. This means putting your best foot forward and minimizing mistakes and errors. We have worked with experts to take a look at this university research assistant resume sample, so we can help you recognize common mistakes so you dont make them in your resume.
Make Sure the Organization of the Resume is Clear
The organization of our sample resume is very confusing. It doesnt follow conventional organization formats, which are designed to make the resume easy to read. You want to avoid creating your own format because the person reading it is going to expect to see things in a specific order. Nobody wants to have to hunt around to find information in a resume. The person reading the resume probably has a large stack to get through and doesnt want to waste time trying to navigate a resume that isnt clearly organized. In this way, being different will make you stand out in a way that will hurt you. Your resume is likely to end up in the trash can and not even be read. The best options when organizing your resume is to use a chronological order because it is the most common and most preferred by recruiters and hiring managers. This format will work for almost all situations. The only exception would be when the applicant needs to focus on skills and strengths instead of work history because they are changing careers or have little to no work history. In those cases, the work history can be moved near the end of the resume instead of being in the middle. However, the overall format should be to start with a summary section that gives a paragraph introducing the applicant, highlighting the most important skills and experience. This is followed by a list of skills and a list of accomplishments. Then the work history and education end the resume. Make sure to never include references or say they are available upon request. If references are wanted, you will be asked for them.
Make Sure the Skills Section Focuses on Key words or Phrases
The skills section of a resume is where you use key terms and phrases to highlight your skills. In the sample resume, the core qualifications section is comparable to a skills section. However, the way things are worded in the sample resume doesnt really highlight skills. Points like statistical training or computer skills are very vague and dont give a good idea of the exact skills the applicant has in these areas. Make sure when creating your skills section that you are concise and descriptive. These are important because they give a good overview at the many talents you have and the skills you possess.
Watch Verb Tenses in the Experience Section
When writing your experience section, you will use present tense verbs only for a job where you are currently still employed. All past jobs should use past tense. In the sample resume, the applicant used present tense for all the job entries. While this isnt a huge issue, it speaks to professionalism. Every detail in a resume is important. You want to put your absolute best foot forward, which means paying attention to every detail, no matter how small.
