Whether you work a civilian job or have spent your entire career in the military, a resume can speak volumes about your experience, education and professionalism. What many don’t know is that a resume can say bad things about you, too, when mistakes find their way in. Use keywords in highlights or skills section
The highlights or skills section of a resume provide employers with snippets of information. Instead of writing long phrases, this section should only include keywords that best represent the idea behind them. Roderick uses long phrases in his resume, so he needs to rewrite them. This will also save space. WRONG:
Format the accomplishments section correctly
An accomplishments section should only exist if an applicant has three or more notable or measurable items to list. Promotions, metrics and awards are great examples of what can be included in this section. Each point should also have a bullet point to clearly separate the information. Roderick doesn’t follow these guidelines, so he needs to rewrite this section. WRONG: Accomplishments Completed and maintained written narrative documentation of activities concerning personnel requiring the assistance of the Army Community Services which included re-integration counseling, financial support training/counseling and the wounded warrior program. Facilitated command climate sessions and equal opportunity training with over 150 personnel which enabled the organization to reduce complaints by 25%. Because Roderick doesn’t include three or more entries, he needs to remove the accomplishments section and place this information in the experience section with the employment is pertains to.
Use bullet points for employment details
Bullet points are always necessary in the experience section and whenever a list appears. Roderick doesn’t use bullet points, but instead uses spaces to separate job duties and details. To fix this error, the applicant needs to place a bullet point next to each entry. WRONG: Experience Management Assistant U.S. Air Force ?
