Make sure the professional summary is long enough
Even if an applicant doesn’t have a lot of experience, he or she should still write a fully-fleshed professional summary. This section should be four to six lines long and showcase the most relevant skills, attributes, education and experience an applicant has. Joseph does a good job in this section, but it isn’t quite long enough. He needs to write at least one more sentence to lengthen this area.
Don’t include coursework relevant to the degree earned
If an applicant has just graduated, education is probably the most important part of the resume. However, there are some things no resume should contain. This applicant listed biology coursework that is relevant to the degree he earned. This should be left off completely. He also lists Italian and College Writing courses, which are probably not relevant enough to the position he is going after to include in the resume. These should be removed as well.
Lead each job detail with an active verb
When an applicant writes duties for the experience section, each entry should start with an active verb. This helps make reading easier and makes for engaging content. Joseph doesn’t lead with verbs for many details. He would fix this problem by checking out the following example. WRONG: University Chemistry Lab ? College Park, MD
RIGHT: University Chemistry Lab ? College Park, MD
Write five to eight details for each employment entry
Every job listed on a resume should have between five to eight points. This helps employers see exactly what training and skills you learned for each position. This applicant only includes a couple points for each, so he would need to include a few more.
Use bullet points to separate information in the experience section
Bullet points create clarity on a resume whenever information is listed. This applicant fails to use them for the job details in the experience section. All details in the experience section should be placed in list form and given a bullet point. WRONG: High School Student Council ? Medway, Ma Council Executive- Treasurer
RIGHT: High School Student Council ? Medway, Ma Council Executive- Treasurer
Only use keywords in the highlights section
The highlights or skills section is a great place to showcase quick snippets of information. However, only keywords should be used here. This applicant would need to remove a few words to make the best keywords, and remove any keywords that aren’t relevant to the job. RIGHT:
