Writing your resume can be an intimidating task, especially if you don’t know how to articulate your previous professional experiences or unique qualifications. Doing so is vital because it can set you apart from the other applicants. Also remember that your resume is often your employer’s first impression of you. In order to help you out with this important process, we have studied and reviewed a sample Steel Mill Employee resume and pointed out areas that are problematic or could use some revision. Pay close attention to these areas and avoid making the same common mistakes in your own resume writing.
Always use bullets for listing information
One of the most important features of your resume is its organization and clarity. Bullet points are especially important for listing responsibilities under the work experience section. Because the employer will have several resumes to read over, it is important that yours is memorable and can be read quickly. Using bullet points will emphasize each item you have listed. Notice the difference between these two entries: WRONG: CMC SteelMarch 2010 April 2013 San Antonio, TX Warehouseman Unloaded and stored raw material deliveries. Notice how simply adding bullet points can drastically increase the readability of the text.
Avoid repetitive language
Because your resume should be short in nature, be sure that every word counts. Using repetitive language can detract from the originality of your resume. In this sample resume, the applicant has used the phrase knowledge of three times in the highlights section. Although each phrase denotes a different kind of knowledge, using that phrase repetitively will take away from your writing. Instead, try to diversify your language. Phrases such as mastery of or proficiency in will add more vibrancy to your writing.
Keep education brief
The education section is important, but this should be one of the shortest entries on your resume. The only necessary details are the institution from which you received your education and any relevant coursework. In this case, the applicant should consolidate information listed in this section by using bullet notes. If you are ready to move forward in this process, you might consider consulting the experts.
