If a job receives a lot of well-qualified applicants, then it can sometimes be hard for a hiring manager to choose who should receive an interview. It is common for employers to place a heavy emphasis on resumes when making decisions, which is why it is important to learn from samples. We have collected a stage production rigger resume sample so that we could reveal common resume mistakes that experts have pointed out to us.
Impress the reader from the beginning
In this sample, the individual begins with a summary statement. This is a great way to quickly pitch your resume to potential employers. Since this is likely the first thing they will read, you want to make it as impactful as possible. Your summary should grab their attention and make them want to read more. The summary in this sample is only one line, and only mentions the individuals experience. The section would be stronger if it was 4 to 6 lines, briefly mentioned the individuals experience and included important skills. You can mention a couple major skill sets, and then go on to discuss soft skills and relevant personality traits.
Use bullet points when listing
Whenever you are listing in your resume, you should format the items using bullet points. This makes it easier for a hiring manager to read, and it makes it appear more organized. It can be tempting to write your experience section in paragraph form like in this sample. However, paragraph form does not make it more professional; it just makes the resume appear sloppy, boring, and difficult to decipher. Bullet points are pleasing to the eye, and they allow the important information to grab the readers attention if he or she is just skimming through it. WRONG: Construction & Rigging of Sets in studio as well as location for Broadcast shows. Films: Batman, Spiderman, The Wolf of Wall Street as well as other film projects. Television episodes: The Knick, True Story,The Normal Heart, Board Walk Empire, The Good Wife, Smash and Elementary. RIGHT: Construction & Rigging of Sets
Avoid creating unnecessary sections
This stage production rigger resume sample did a great job of highlighting all of the individuals experience. It really described the various jobs that he or she was involved in, but it lacked any substantial details about accomplishments or awards. Here is what the sample resume put under the accomplishments section. *As a member of a team of professionals we produced over 7 events per week for 18 years. *Business Agent: Local I.A.T.S.E. 538 Theatrical Stage Employees. It is recommended that this section only be included if you have enough information to make 3 bullet points. Otherwise, it should be included with the experience section. Since this individual did not have enough accomplishments or awards to put in this section, it is a good idea to remove it since it is unnecessary. You can then add the information into the experience section, for example: Union Business Agent 10/1999 to 12/2001 Local 538 I.A.T.S.E New London/Westerly, CT/RI Business Agent: Local I.A.T.S.E. 538 Theatrical Stage Employees.
