Applying for a new job can be exciting, but if your resume is riddled with errors and incorrect formatting, then you may not be getting any calls for a while. There are specific things hiring managers want to find on every resume that come through their doors, and our experts know what those aspects are. Your resume should have a summary and Skills section
There are certain items that are optional to include on a resume, but some things are absolutely essential. You always want your resume to begin with a brief summary that is four to six sentences long and succinctly covers your skillset and professional background. You also want a section that lists off all the various skills you have acquired in your lifetime. This should include a combination of specific tasks you did at previous jobs as well as soft skills that are transferrable. These sections should come one after the other on your resume, so you are not beginning with a section dedicated to your accomplishments.
Make sure your Accomplishments section is justified
You do not have to include a portion of your resume devoted to your achievements, but if you are planning on adding one, then you need to be certain that it deserves to be there. You want it to include information related to actual noteworthy accomplishments you have earned over the years. This sample resume has the following points for that section:
Earning a Master of Education is information that only needs to go under Education, and we learn that she has experience working as a special ed teacher underneath Experience. It is also incredibly vague when she puts, Arkansas and India for several years, but if she is referring to the fact that she has lived in those places for years, then she can remove it because an employer will not really care.
Make sure every job has some description
This sample resume has an Experience section that is very confusing and poorly formatted, so above all else, she should make everything cleaner and easier to read. Secondly, some of the jobs she has listed have absolutely no bullet points given, so we do not know what she did for certain jobs. Nothing is given for her time working as a special education teacher at Vista Health Hospital and a couple other workplaces. You want to aim for at least five points for every job in order to provide the hiring manager with the most comprehensive overview of your experiences.
Include end dates for every job
The most recent job on this resume sample is the one at Vista Health Hospital, but the only date given is October 2010. We can assume this is when she started working there, but we have no idea if she has already quit or if that is her current position. Always have a beginning and end date. If you currently work somewhere, then you can just put Current.
Remove Additional Information section
Having a section titled Additional Information is not needed because it is too vague. Chances are good that anything you would put under there would work far better somewhere else. This sample resume has some volunteer work under that part, and it would be better suited underneath Experience. Look through your own resume to make sure it abides by all of these rules.
