Your resume is a very important key to getting the job you want. If your resume isn’t in good shape, then your chances of getting hired could be low. We consulted with the experts to look over this shipping & receiving administrator resume sample and point out a few of the common mistakes made in it. This way, you can see what not to do with your resume.
The Summary Shouldn’t Read Like an Objective
The old objective that used to start a resume is pretty much obsolete nowadays. Instead, resumes should begin with a summary. The summary doesn’t state that you want a job like the objective did. There really isn’t a need to do this because you obviously want the job. Instead, the summary should give a general overview of what skills you have and what you have done so far in your career. In the sample resume, the summary looks like this: Summary To obtain a management position that utilizes my organization, leadership and planning skills. Experience Summary Experienced in customer service. Experienced the billing processes. I have strong communication skills and enjoy working with others. I am a very organized and reliable person; I like to go the extra mile to help others. I believe no matter what position a person holds or title we can all still learn from others. I am a very fast learner and I welcome other people’s opinions. I am experienced in organizing crews and maintaining their operations. I am very familiar with all shipping and receiving processes and procedures. This needs revised so it doesn’t start out by using an objective style sentence. You don’t have to use pronouns, but if you do, then they need to be used throughout. This summary mixes sentence styles, which is confusing to read. Verbs should be in the first person, though, as if you are using the I pronoun.
Experience Should Only Have One Point Per Bullet
In the experience section, you want your job duties and responsibilities to be in list form, not in a paragraph. However, you only want one point per bullet and the bullets shouldn’t end with any punctuation. Here is an entry from the sample resume’s experience section: February 1999 to Current Shipping & Receiving Administrator Ennis, TX Schedules and routes in bond and out bond trucks Data entry/receiving and shipping A fill in for the Ups and Fed-Ex station Issuing pick-ups/returns/re-deliveries Creates new processes and organization Distributes and pulls orders Fill in for shipping/receiving manager Forklift operator (sit down, cherry picker, walkers, stand ups) Load and unload trucks. Keeps accurate files and reports of progress Operates an RF gun Helps over sees waste progress Billing/data entry/stock transfers Finds and implement improvements/researches problems Coordinate with customers/vendors/plant/customer service/accounting/etc. Organizes cycle counts and inventory processes. While this entry is in list form, each point has more than one job duty. The main reason for using a list is so it is easier to read, but if each bullet isn’t covering just one point, then it really isn’t easier to read. Here is this entry revised: February 1999 to Current Shipping & Receiving Administrator Ennis, TX Schedule and route in bound and out bound trucks Data entry/receiving and shipping Fill in for the Ups and Fed-Ex station Issue pick-ups/returns/re-deliveries Create new processes and organization Distribute and pull orders Fill in for shipping/receiving manager Forklift operator (sit down, cherry picker, walkers, stand ups) Load and unload trucks Keep accurate files and reports of progress Operate an RF gun Help over sees waste progress Billing/data entry/stock transfers Find and implement improvements/researches problems Coordinate with customers/vendors/plant/customer service/accounting/etc Organize cycle counts and inventory processes
Always Proofread Your Resume
You want your resume to look professional and polished, but grammar errors, spelling mistakes and formatting issues can ruin your resume’s appearance. In order to catch all issues, you must proofread your resume before finalizing it. Keep in mind that errors can also make a resume hard to read or confusing. In the sample resume, for example, the education section has an error that makes it a little confusing. The last entry – Frost High School – has two dates, while the American Intercontinental University entry has no date. This is an error that would have been easily caught if the resume had been proofread. Now that you have looked over a few common errors in our sample resume, you are ready to get started on your own resume. Use QuintCareer’s Resume Builder to put together your winning resume today.
