Don’t list experience that is older than 15 years.
There is only so much space on a resume. Ideally, it should be kept to 1-2 pages maximum. That means job seekers need to be particular with what is added to the resume. Job experience older than 15 years is often not relevant. The only reasons to add older job experience is if a candidate has been with a company for longer than that period of time or if that experience will be beneficial to the position applied for and there isn’t enough relevant job experience already listed. Example of older experience that does not benefit the resume: August 1976 toSeptember 1981 General American Life Insurance Company St. Louis, MO Assistant Supervisor
Make certain education is listed clearly.
Nearly all employers will want to know what an applicant’s education level is. It’s important to list both the degree and the area of expertise the degree is in. It is fine not to list dates unless it is recent enough to be relevant. If you only took coursework but did not obtain a degree, list Coursework in [specialty area], Name of School. Don’t leave hiring managers wondering what type of degree was earned. Education St. Louis Community College St. Louis, Mo Business Administration
Only list relevant and applicable affiliations.
Try to highlight only affiliations that are current and relevant to the job applied for. The organizations should be aligned with the industry or type of position. The only legitimate reason for listing another organization is if the job seeker held a board position of some sort. Don’t use acronyms unless certain it is widely enough known that the hiring manager will recognize it. Leading committees should be not only relevant, but also fairly impressive to be listed in the affiliations section.
