Writing an excellent resume is one of the most effective ways to make the right first impression on your employer. In order to help you out with this process, we have reviewed a Senior Delivery Driver resume sample and highlighted areas that need improvement or rewriting. Pay close attention to these sections and avoid making the same mistakes in your own resume writing.
Clean up the summary
The summary section is a wonderful opportunity to showcase any skill sets or qualifications that could potentially set you apart from other applicants. Doing so successfully means authentically and uniquely expressing your talents as though you were making a sales pitch. Think of the summary as a brief introduction to the rest of your application. A strong summary can motivate the employer to continue reading your resume and be curious about who you are as a professional. In this resume sample, the applicant has made a few errors that can be easily corrected. First of all, the format of the summary should look clean. This means there should be one paragraph without any indents. Secondly, the summary should not exceed 6 lines of text. Otherwise, this section can overwhelm the rest of the resume. Lastly, pronouns should be taken out and instead the phrases should be written in concise fragments.
Modify the highlights section
The highlights section is a place for you to pack your resume with key phrases and terms that can be associated with your professional profile. There should be a delicate balance of mentioning soft skills and specialized field-related skills. In this sample resume, the applicant has exceeded the number of items listed. Typically, there should be 2 columns of items with no more than 7-8 per column. Some of the items that this applicant has listed, such as plumbing, customer service, and valid U.S. passport are not relevant to the job and are unnecessary. Remember that the highlights section should offer only relevant skills.
Always use bullets for listing items
The formatting of your resume is crucial. One of the best ways to ensure organization and clarity is to use bullet points for separating each description under your previous work experiences. Because your employer will have several resumes to read through, you want to make sure yours is as easy to navigate as possible. Notice the difference between these 2 formats: WRONG: Experience Durham School Service October 2010 to Current School Bus Driver Albuquerque, New Mexico/USA Responsible for the lives of children, from the time I pick them up from their homes to the safe arrival to school. Responsible for the return trip and also for safe behavior while on route to and from home and school. RIGHT: Experience Durham School Service October 2010 to Current School Bus Driver Albuquerque, New Mexico/USA
Notice how adding bullet points immediately clarifies the writing. You should also note that each previous job should have more than 2 bullets listed so that the reader can have a better idea of the responsibilities gained from each position.
