Crafting an excellent resume means authentically portraying your unique qualifications and professional experiences. Doing so is one of the most important aspects of your application because your resume is often your employers first impression of you. In order to help you out with this process, we have reviewed a sample Senior Care Certified Nursing Assistant resume and pointed out areas that could use improvement or reworking. Be sure to pay attention to these areas as they could help you avoid making the same mistake on your own resume.
Adhere to traditional format
When you are listing information, it is important to stick to a tradition format. The recommended order of information is typically the following:
In this sample resume, the applicant has listed licenses before professional experiences. Doing so isnt the worst mistake; however, your resume might be more memorable if it follows the traditional outline.
Always use bullets for listing items
Formatting is one of the most important aspects of your resume. A document that is unorganized can detract from your overall resume, and your potential employer may not devote time to trying to sort through it all. In this sample Senior Care Certified Nursing Assistant, the applicant has listed a large block of descriptive text under the first professional experience. While including relevant information is always encouraged, an overwhelming amount can greatly detract from your resume. In order to prevent this, be sure to use bullet notes and concise fragments. Notice the improvement in the following example: Certified Nursing Assistant Auburn, AL
Notice how simple formatting edits can improve the readability of this section immensely. Also keep in mind that it is not recommended to have more than 8 bullet points per experience.
Avoid repetitive language
Because your resume should be short in language, each word and phrase should offer new and descriptive information. Therefore, repetitive language should be avoided. In this sample resume, the applicant has listed under skill highlights two items that begin with understands. Not only is this word rather empty, but it is also used a couple times and therefore does not offer anything new. When you are writing your resume, remember to use words as economically as possible.
