No matter what kind of job you want, you are going to need a first-class resume to capture the attention of a hiring manager and get called in for an interview. Our experts have gone through numerous resumes to learn more about what should and should not be done. We had them review a senior bank teller resume sample, and they have some useful pieces of advice to offer for it.
Summary should be one continuous paragraph
There are various sections of a resume that should be divided using bullet points, but the summary is not one of them. This part should just be one paragraph that briefly describes your skillset and personality traits. This sample resume’s summary is two sentences long, and each sentence is given its own long, so in order to correct this, she would simply want to move the second sentence up a line to come directly after the first one.
There should be a minimum of three accomplishments
Many resume writers choose to include a separate section devoted to their accomplishments, and this is an excellent way to highlight your past triumphs and make them stand out in the hiring manager’s mind. However, you want to be certain that this section is justified and that you have enough accomplishments to warrant their own section. This resume sample only has one point under this portion, and in general, you want to have at least three. You would either want to remove that section entirely and put that point underneath professional experience or come up with a few more noteworthy achievements to talk about.
Add specific details to accomplishments
So far the only accomplishment listed is this one:
You want to make a potential employer remember you after reading your resume, and a good way to do that is to include specific, quantifiable details. Right now this point just says that she earned some awards, but it would be much better if she stated what the specific awards were and what she did to earn them. Doing this could also solve the issue of the three point minimum if she actually does have several awards she can bring up.
Describe experience using bullet points
The experience she has as a personal banking specialist at Bank Atlantic is listed in paragraph form, but employers want to see this information presented as a bulleted list. It just makes the material easier to read through. Each sentence should be given its own separate bullet point. Therefore, if we were to reformat this portion, it would look like this:
Similar to the point mentioned above, you would want to try to include specific details so that it does not just read as a job description.
Optional: it is okay to leave out date of graduation if it has been a while
We see that this person earned her degree in 1973. This creates a gap on the resume between 1973 and 2008, and while she was likely working during those years and just chose to leave them out to conserve space, it would be acceptable to just leave out 1973. You do not have to do this, but it is an option. Do not fall into the common pitfalls of resume writing. If you require additional assistance, then QuintCareer’s Resume Builder is for you.
