When you are writing your resume, it can be quite easy to make mistakes and not even be aware of it. There are many different things that go into creating a resume, so learning as much as you can will help ensure that you are doing things correctly. We consulted with the experts to help you learn more by looking at common mistakes made in this school bus mechanic resume sample.
One of the biggest mistakes you can make when writing a resume is to skip proofreading. You may think that spell check and grammar check programs are going to catch mistakes so you don’t have to bother with reading over your resume before finalizing it. However, that is a huge mistake. Those programs can only catch very specific errors. They don’t have the ability to tell things like when a wrong word is used or when a possessive is used instead of a plural. Proofreading is often the only way to catch some mistakes, like the ones found in the summary section of our sample resume: Have been trained in International On Board computers and Troubleshooting of there v-8 engines and there Maxx Force engines. Here the word there is used instead of their, which is the word that should have been used. This type of error affects the professional image you are portraying with your resume. While your job may not involve having to have perfect grammar, it is still something that you are judged on in a resume.
Use Lists in the Experience Section, Not Paragraphs
The experience section contains a lot of information, so it is important that you present it in a way that is easy to read. In our sample resume, the applicant used a paragraph form, which is difficult to read: School bus mechanic 07/2010 to Current Berne Knox Westerlo Central School Berne, ny Followed checklists to verify that all important parts were examined.Serviced air conditioning, heating, engine-cooling and electrical systems.Rebuilt faulty assemblies, including steering systems and linkages.Examined vehicles to determine the extent of damage or malfunctions.Specialized in servicing brakes and fuel systems.Communicated with drivers regarding vehicle issues and potential repairs.Repaired and replaced belts, hoses and steering systems.Executed all phases of power system tear down and repair.Operated pneumatic tools and air compressors.Rebuilt and repaired engines.Removed and replaced tires, shocks, struts and brakes.Repaired and replaced radiators and water pumps.Organized work records and filed reports.Complied with state vehicle requirements, including engine safety and combustion control standards.Overhauled and repaired engines and motors.Reassembled engines and made adjustments as needed.Installed timing gears and timing belts.Guided mechanics with decisions concerning repair and replacement of parts.
