Pay Attention to Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar
Spelling and grammar are extremely important in any written communication, but especially in job application materials. Use Bulleted Lists Instead of Paragraphs
Key words and phrases can get lost in a paragraph of text. To best showcase your skills and experience, use bullet points. Under the experience section, be sure to begin each point with a strong action word and end with a period. Don’t reiterate your job description, but instead focus on your actions and accomplishments. Fill in the Details
There is no need to have separate sections for experience and work history; these should be combined into one section. In this example, the entire work history section is empty except for the heading Salon owner. If you have worked in any role for more than five minutes, you should have several bullet points’ worth of information to fill in under the heading. In the role of salon owner, entries could include management skills, financial and record-keeping abilities, skills related to working with clients and employees and so on.
Edit for Clarity
When you are getting all of your thoughts down on paper, it is OK to write down anything and everything that comes to mind. However, your goal with a resume is to communicate your qualifications and accomplishments in as few words as possible, so go back and edit what you’ve written, making sure that it is clear and concise. A potential employer should have a good idea about who you are and what you can do after just a quick glance at your resume.
