Your resume is essential to getting called back for an interview. With a limited amount of space, you have to capture your abilities, personality traits, experiences, and qualifications. Understand what goes into a summary
The first mistake this resume makes is right at the top of the page. The writer created an objective section, rather than a resume. This was the standard in the past, but it is now expected for you to give an overview of your abilities, not your goals. My objective is to obtain a position with your company that will allow me to utilize my nursing skills in a manner that would be beneficial to the company as well as the people who are dependent upon my care. Out of the entire summary section, only the phrase, utilize my nursing skills says anything about the writers ability. Think of your summary as a way to sell yourself right off the bat. It is common for employers to never get past the summary unless they are already hooked. Do not waste any time getting to the point of what you bring to the table. Aim for about four lines.
Add a skills section
After the summary, the resume immediately jumps into the working experience. Something else should always come before the job history. You have several options, but you still have space to expand on your abilities before getting to the fundamental information of your working experiences. Frequently, candidates use this space to write about their skills, either in a bulleted list or in a paragraph. If you choose this option, be sure to include varied skills that are relevant to the position, and keep it brief. Three lines is plenty, or two columns of three or four bullets. You can also include an achievements, awards, or highlights section in this spot. Regardless of what you decide to write, be sure to take every opportunity to sell yourself to the reader. This resume is slightly too short, with blank space at the bottom of the page. Do not bleed over into two pages, but make sure you use the entirety of the page. In this case, adding a skills section would be just the right amount to fill out the resume nicely.
Format your experiences correctly
This writer has the benefit of an extensive experiences section. This looks extremely good on a resume, but this particular job history is formatted incorrectly and awkwardly. First of all, the date can be listed on the same line as the job title, aligned to the right, which means each position only needs one or two lines to be introduced before the bullets. Secondly, the most recent position should be listed as 2010 to present If you are not currently working, try to cover up this gap, possibly by mentioning schooling, internships, or volunteer work. Also, be sure you are including more information for the most recent experiences. This resume has most of the bullets in the oldest two jobs. Lastly, make sure to format the bullets properly. Only the current position should be in present tense, and each point should start with a strong action verb and be without pronouns. Wrong:
