Be Clear on Professional Experience
Youll notice that the very first listing in the professional experience section does not have a title. You should always list the job title you held, as well as the location at which you held that position. They need to be listed before the bullet points that highlight what you did at the job. The dates of employment should also be listed with the start date first, followed by a dash and the end date. If you are currently employed in that position, include the end date as current. WRONG: 01/2008
RIGHT: Registered Nurse January 2008-Current Good Shepard In Home Healthcare Charlotte, North Carolina
Keep the Pronouns Out of the Professional Summary
Your professional summary is a great place to highlight specific skills and qualities that make you the best candidate for the job. While it should be in first person, the sentences should be fragments that do not contain any pronouns. Keeping it in paragraph format is the right way to lay it out, but using I makes it sound like bragging instead of highlighting. WRONG: Extremely competent, well organized, and professional REGISTERED NURSE with a consistent track record of surpassing standards and goals in New York’s premier hospitals. As a motivator detailed problem solver I take pride in meticulous work that continually strives to expand professional knowledge and responsibilities. In addition, I consistently task myself to create, implement, and document efficient methods of operations in order to excel in daily operations RIGHT: Competent, well organized and professional Registered Nurse with consistent record of surpassing standards and goals in New Yorks premier hospitals. Motivated problem solver with meticulous work ethic. Looking to expand professional knowledge and responsibilities while implementing and documenting efficient operation methods that help daily operations to excel.
Cut Down on Personal Information
At the top of the sample resume, you will see personal contact information. Of course this is necessary for the hiring manager to get a hold of you, but you do not need to get too personal. In this sample, the applicant included a full address, two phone numbers and an email address. Simply including the city and state that you live in is sufficient for the address. The house number and zip code can be eliminated. You only need to include one phone number, which is generally a cell phone because they are more convenient when someone needs to get in touch with you. An email address is a perfect touch, but make sure that it sounds professional and does not hint at any personal information about you.
