Its always a good idea to check out a few sample resumes before working on your own. Our professional team has gone over this retail sales associate resume sample and pointed out a few errors and made some suggestions for improvement. Use the following ideas to enhance your resume and to help you avoid making any common mistakes.
It Is Not Necessary to List High School Education
For those who attended college, listing a high school diploma is unnecessary, especially if it is several years or more in the past. With a college listed on your resume, employers will assume that you graduated from high school. Including unnecessary information uses up valuable space that could be better used to list your desirable skills and qualities. If you graduated from a college or university, be sure to include the graduation date and any honors you may have received, such as summa cum laude.
Use Bulleted Lists
While the sample lists some great work experience, it is all in paragraph form. Long sentences and paragraphs are cumbersome to read quickly and are often skipped over by hiring managers. Using lists with four to eight important points is a much better way to highlight your accomplishments, skills and experience. Be sure to record most important skills and responsibilities first. Consider the following changes to the most recent work experience in the retail sales associate resume sample: WRONG: Cashier/Sales Associate 11/2012 to 06/2013 – Bed,Bath,& Beyond Plano, Texas Assisted customers with store and product complaints. Separate Skills, Highlights and Accomplishments
An accomplishments section of a resume should be reserved for awards and designations outside the norm of daily work. It can be a great place to highlight recognitions such as, employee of the month, or quantifiable achievement such as increased profitability by five percent through upselling techniques. The retail sales associate sample resume has instead listed daily accomplishments that would fit better in the skills section of the resume. Combining the Core Strengths and Accomplishments sections will prove much more effective and less repetitive. Heres an example of how to merge the two: Skills
Make the Summary a Declaration
The summary statement is your chance to highlight your best qualities. Be sure to speak in declarative statements without any pronouns. Although the statements should be in first person format, remember never to use the pronoun, I, in the summary or elsewhere. The final sentence of the summary could read as follows: Seeking to bring dependability, organization and superb customer service through hands-on attention to detail and dedication.
