A well-written resume is the first part of landing a brand new job, so you want to be sure yours is up to par. It is recommended that people currently working on their resumes should look through a retail associate resume sample to get an idea of what other job candidates have done to see what does and does not work. Fortunately for you, our experts have gone through a sample resume and found what was wrong, and below are their recommendations on ways to improve it.
Always write years’ experience, not years experience
The summary at the top of this resume is pretty good and has all the information you would want to see in this section. However, there is a crucial flaw at the bottom where it says, years experience instead of years’ experience. It would also be acceptable to write, years of experience. This may seem like a small thing to nitpick, but when you are up against a bunch of other candidates who will have similar work experience and skills, every little thing counts.
Only include notable deeds in accomplishment section
The accomplishments section on this resume has some pretty good points, but there are also bullet points about certain things that are not necessarily notable. One of the points is: Greeted customers upon entrance and handled all cash and credit transactions. This is not an accomplishment; it is just one of the many tasks that is expected of someone in this line of work. Therefore, it should be listed under one of the previous places of employment on the resume instead of under accomplishments. A good example of something that should go under accomplishments is: Received exceeds expectations’ ratings on performance reviews.
Use bullet points under work history
This resume has a good amount of work experience; however, the way in which it is organized is not good at all. Each section is simply a big paragraph that is a lot to take in. In order to make it easier for the employer to get through all the information listed, you should utilize bullet points to separate each individual contribution. Therefore, the Walmart section should be organized like this:
This is so much easier to read, and your potential employer will thank you for formatting it like this.
Have a maximum of eight bullet points for each position
Every job is going to require a bunch of tasks that could fill up a resume, but for the sake of simplicity, you should stick to having somewhere between five and eight bullet points for every previous place of work. The position at Omni Mount Washington Resort has far more than eight points, so one way to get that number down is to combine multiple points, so they fit within one bullet. Another thing you can do is to stick to the tasks that were most significant to your position or the ones that would come into play most often in this new job you are applying for.
Do not include high school diploma
If you are currently in high school or have just graduated, then it can be good to say you have graduated. However, if it has been a while, even if you do not have a college degree, you can eliminate a high school education from your resume. This resume states that she graduated from high school in 1983, so it is no longer relevant to where she is in her life right now. You can shorten your resume by just getting rid of it completely. By abiding by some easy-to-remember rules, you can have a truly remarkable retail associate resume. QuintCareer’s Resume Builder is available in case you need some extra assistance.
