If you are in the process of applying for a resume sample, you want to make sure that your first impression is as strong as possible. Doing so means writing an excellent resume that could impress your potential employer. A resume is also your opportunity to showcase your unique qualifications and professional experiences that could set you apart from other candidates. In order to help you out with this, we have reviewed a sample Retail Assistant Manager resume and have pointed out areas that could be improved upon. Be sure to pay attention to these things, as doing so can help prevent you from making the same common mistakes in your own resume.
Summary should never exceed 6 lines
The summary is your opportunity to hook your readers attention through an authentic description of your unique characteristics. Resumes are brief in nature, and the summary section should be no exception. The most effective summaries are written in paragraph form with concise fragments. In this sample Retail Assistant Manager resume, the applicant has written a summary that overwhelms the rest of the resume.
Pay attention to formatting
Formatting is an essential ingredient to the clarity of your resume. This involves paying close attention to the way the document is organized. In this sample resume, the applicant has listed 10 different items in the highlights section, when this would be better organized in a table format. Your potential employer will most likely be reading several resumes and therefore, you want to make sure that navigating yours doesnt take up any extra time. This section would be much stronger if fewer points were listed or the table format was employed.
Always use bullets for listing information
Using bullets can also immensely improve the clarity of your application. Notice the experience section of this sample resume. Not only does the applicant exceed the recommended number of points to make, but also he has not used bullet points. Failing to do so may seem like a minor fault, but it can cause the resume to seem sloppy and more difficult to navigate. Remember that your description of employment responsibilities should be as specific as possible. The applicant has listed nearly every task associated with a retail position. Doing so is unnecessary as the reader can assume most of these tasks have been mastered. A consolidated experience section with proper formatting might look something like this: 1st Assistant Manager 07/2007 to 12/2013
Consolidating information and maintaining organization throughout the resume can make a significant improvement. As a general rule of thumb, the number of items listed in each previous employment subsection should never exceed 8 points.
