Having a Flowing Summary
In a professional resume, the Summary offers a unique opportunity to have phrases truly flow. Any other section calls for extremely short phrases organized with bullet points, while the Summary gives you the freedom to express yourself a bit more. Generally, you should have between 4 and 6 longer phrases in this section. The sample has excellent information and follows the basic format of avoiding pronouns and writing in the first person. However, there are a couple overly short phrases like, food and beverage expert, that read more like bullet points. A revised summary might look like: Hardworking Server who thrives under pressure and exceeds expectations to create unforgettable guest experiences. Customer-oriented professional with excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Food and beverage expert with three years of experience working in upscale restaurants. Friendly, punctual and enthusiastic team player who is highly effective at anticipating and accommodating customer needs.
Fill Your Work History, but Don’t Overfill
In the sample, the applicant does an excellent job of providing a wealth of important information regarding past work responsibilities. The first entry in particular has far too many bullet points. The standard format for this section only demands between 5 to 8 bullet points per entry. This ensures applicant’s give the hiring manager enough information without crowding the area. For the first entry, the candidate should look to see what bullet points can be combined and what can go elsewhere. For example, received frequent customer compliments for going above and beyond normal duties, might belong in an accomplishments section. List Education Chronologically
In the sample, the applicant falls into a common mistake in the Education section: putting completed education above the most recent education. As will the Work Experience section, entries should be listed chronologically starting with the most recent placement. From the sample, it is implied that the Associate’s degree is completed as the applicant has moved on to a Bachelor’s degree program. However, there are no start or end dates to indicate this. Additionally, there is not need to separate the Bachelor’s degree information with a current label in the left date column. Instead, the applicant should simply put the start date. An updated education section would be: 2014 – Current Bachelor of Arts: Business management/administration, Health and Physical Fitness Colorado Mesa University – 1100 North Avenue Grand Junction, CO 2013 Associate of Arts: Business Management Front Range Community College – 3645 West 112th Avenue Westminster, CO 80031
