Summary should be a paragraph
This sample resume contains a summary that is only one sentence in length. The purpose of starting a resume off with a summary is to give a hiring manager enough information to make him or her interested to read the rest of the page. A single sentence is not enough to impress anyone, so the writer would want to lengthen this portion out a little bit. She should include more information about the talents, personality traits and experiences she has acquired over the years.
Have a minimum of three accomplishments if they are given their own section
It is not essential to include an Accomplishments section, but it is a good idea if you have earned several achievements throughout the years that are worth highlighting. The general rule of thumb to follow for this section is that you want to have at least three things to talk about if you are going to put them in their own unique section. This resume sample only has one point given, and that point is repeated underneath Experience. Unless she has other noteworthy achievements to talk about, it would be preferable to simply remove this section entirely.
Describe experiences using bullet points
The summary should be a paragraph, but the information given for your workplace experiences should be formatting using bullet points. There is no need to have complete sentences strung together to create full paragraphs for this section. You just want to describe what you did and accomplished at each place of employment. Reformatting the material given for BonAppetit should look like this:
Do not say why you no longer work somewhere
As you can see, we removed the information about how the restaurant had to close in December of 2012 in the above list. You should never include information about why you had to quit a certain job on your resume. An employer may ask about it during an interview, and that is the time when you can explain the situation. The restaurant may have closed for any number of reasons, and she can go into more detail later. For the resume, you should focus on your successes.
Get rid of high school information
The only people who should put information from high school on a resume are current high school students and people who have graduated within the last year. If you earned your high school diploma some time ago, which is the case for this sample resume, then it would be best to exclude it from all future resumes. She has plenty of workplace experiences, and she has even earned a certificate in clerical bookkeeping. She has plenty of information to talk about, so including material from high school is just superfluous. Take the time to make sure your resume is free of errors and contains all the relevant information an employer wants to see.
