One way to get better at writing resumes that you may have never thought of before is to read through sample resumes to get a sense of what should be included and what should be left out. Work history section should include bullet points
You want to make it as easy as possible for an employer to read through your resume and retain all of the information on it. Therefore, when you are listing all of the responsibilities and accomplishments you have had at each place of employment, you should separate each one with a bullet point. The information given for this person being the kitchen manager at Chili’s is currently presented as such: Managed the day to day operations focusing on lowering food cost, building sales,and labor. Oversaw food orders. Managed a staff of 15 employees in the kitchen. Preformed bi monthly inventory counts. Rolled out new food menu items for other kitchen managers and staff. You never want to have paragraphs in the experience section, and instead, you want to have it like this:
Use present tense for roles you currently have
This resume states that this person currently works as the kitchen manager at Chili’s, but the information about it is in the past tense. Using the past tense works for positions you no longer hold; however, if you are still working at the job, you want to convey that accurately by using the present tense. Therefore, we would want to change the above bullet points to look like this:
Use a variety of action verbs
You should notice how two of the points in the above list begin with the word, Manage. You want to show that you put in some thought into your resume, so it can be hugely beneficial to keep the points exactly as they are, but use a synonym for one of them to add some variety. Therefore, those two points should go like this:
This is an easy and simple way to show the employer that you have a rich and expansive vocabulary, and it will also make your resume more interesting to read.
Do not include statement, References available upon request
Many people feel compelled to add the sentence References available upon request at the end of their resumes, but the truth is that it only wastes space. If an employer wants to talk with your references, they will ask you for them during the interview. You never want to include a list of references directly onto your resume.
